Types of booting

A cold boot is the process of turning on a computer after it has been powered
off completely
A warm boot is the process of restarting, or resetting, a computer that is already turned on.
Under the Windows environment, a warm boot can be performed by pressing the
CTRL+ALT+DEL key combinations.

Qns How is a cold boot different from a warm boot? Describe how to perform a
warm boot under the Windows environment?

Description of the booting process of computer using window operating system
The booting process of a personal computer using the Windows operating system.
1) The power supply sends a signal to the components in the system unit.
2) The processor looks for the BIOS.
3) The BIOS performs the POST.
4) The results of the POST are compared with the data in the CMOS chip.
5) The BIOS looks for the system files in the boot disk.
6) The boot program loads the kernel of the OS into RAM from storage.
7) The OS loads configuration information and displays the desktop on the screen.

How is multitasking different from multiprocessing?
– A multitasking operating system allows a single user to work on two or more applications
that reside in memory at the same time.
-A multiprocessing operating system can support two or more CPUs running programs at the
same time.

BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a computer’s microprocessor uses to start the computer system after it is powered on.

-Identifies all of the computer’s peripheral devices, such as hard drives and expansion cards.
-The BIOS contains a sequence of instructions the computer follows to load the operating system
and other files when the computer is turned on.
